So-called Holy Men and Faith of Leaders (Dr. Manzoor-ul-Haque)

You will be surprised to know how much faith our political leaders have in so-called holy men. Ms. Benazir Bhutto and Mian Nawaz Sharif, both remained prime ministers of Pakistan. At the critical junctures of their tenure they visited a malang baba near Mansehra (NWFP, Pakistan) and counted the number of STROKES he gave them with his stick. Apparently the more the number, the better they thought it for their political future. And then how did they reciprocate? Mian Sahib got PTCL to install an especial telephone in the baba’s hut, and Benazir Bhutto ordered a tarred road to be built to the place.

Imagine educated and supposedly enlightened prime ministers, the masters of the nation’s destiny, going in for this kind of voodoo in these days!

Don’t get bored. Just go through and think how self-deceptive we are when we vote for such “luminaries”! Where do we pin our faith, our conviction, and our commitment to Islam? And to what extent we expect these leaders transform the society to make it at par with what the Quran wants it to be!

Now listen to the criterion the Quran lays for such moments. The Quran says:

“In the light of the hard facts, do you think that you will gain Jannat while you have yet to prove which of you have struggled hard and have endured steadfastly (3:141)”- EXPOSITION

At another point, the Quran says:

“O Jama’at-ul-Momineen, do you think that the victory promised to you will come to you even if you do nothing? After your confession of faith, it will be known who amongst you struggled hard in the cause of Allah, and befriended none other than Allah, the Rasool and the Jama’at-ul-Momineen. Allah is fully apprised of what you do.(9:16) – EXPOSITION

Yet at another point, says the Quran:

“O Jama’at-ul-Momineen, the ideal social system which will be free of dissension will not be created without great hardship and difficulty. Those who established this system earlier met with such formidable obstacles that they cried out: ‘When will our efforts bear fruit O Allah?’ You will also have to confront similar obstructions but be sure that your efforts will be rewarded as were theirs. (2:214) – EXPOSITION

My question to all my palls is: Have we psychologically and cognitively prepared for meeting such a criterion? Pause, reflect, and then follow strategic measures to be the real go-getter. Will you?
